Washington & Lee School of Business

At Blauch Brothers, we take pride in delivering mechanical systems that meet the highest standards of performance, precision, and reliability. Our recent project at Washington and Lee School of Business, reflects exactly that.

This three story, ground up facility stands as one of the largest buildings on campus and honors the historic character of Lexington, Virginia.

Strength in Collaborative Partners

Working alongside general contractor Kjellstrom & Lee, our team led the installation of HVAC, plumbing, piping, and controls systems throughout the building. From utility weld piping to full system integration, this was a comprehensive mechanical scope executed in a highly technical environment.

The project also brought together strong partners, including Kirby Cundiff for insulation and fire protection, and Hobbs, reinforcing a collaborative approach from start to finish.

The Challenges

This was not a typical build. The project site presented significant spatial limitations, with strict campus restrictions that limited ground use and staging areas. At the same time, the building’s mechanical room was located at the very top of the structure, creating a logistical challenge for equipment placement.

Adding to the complexity, the project took place on an active and historic campus. That meant no major shutdowns, tight working conditions, and strict guidelines around what could and could not be altered. Large equipment like chillers and air handlers had to be carefully maneuvered through a roof hatch, while basement piping required precise coordination in extremely tight spaces. Every detail mattered, and expectations were high.

The Blauch Brothers’ Solutions

Our team approached the project with creativity and precision. To overcome access challenges, equipment was strategically flown in and placed through the roof, ensuring safe and efficient installation despite limited space. System layouts were carefully designed to maximize performance within tight constraints, while maintaining compliance with campus standards.

We also incorporated environmentally conscious equipment, including one of the first A.O. Smith water heaters of its size and kind, helping position the building for long term efficiency and sustainability. Through detailed planning, strong coordination, and constant communication, our crews and partners kept the project moving smoothly from start to finish.

Delivering Value

On a project with this level of complexity, reducing risk comes down to execution. Our team maintained a high level of attention to detail across every phase, from interpreting extensive specifications to coordinating installs in confined spaces. By proactively solving challenges and maintaining strict quality control, we were able to prevent delays, avoid rework, and ensure system performance met the client’s expectations. The result is a building that not only functions at a high level but integrates seamlessly into a historic campus environment.

Built With Precision

Projects like the Washington & Lee School of Business highlight what sets Blauch Brothers apart. Technical expertise, strong partnerships, and a shared commitment to getting the details right, every time. We are proud to have played a role in bringing this facility to life and supporting a space where future leaders will learn and grow.
