WELDING & PIPING LEAD

(HARRISONBURG)

Purpose and Scope:

Welding & Piping Lead Mechanics provide hands on leadership to the field crews and ensure that jobs are completed on schedule – from the layout preparation phase through final installation and testing. Additionally, they are the communication link between what is happening on the job site and management. They provide direction and supervision to Apprentices and Journeymen for the installation of a comprehensive range of commercial piping and related equipment as specified by each job and according to the blueprints. Lead Mechanics ensure that their own work along with that of the entire crew is of the utmost quality. Because the mechanical contracting and construction industry is occasionally dependent upon uncontrollable economic factors, mechanics may be assigned to help with Commercial plumbing projects as needed.

Normal Work Schedule:

This will typically be a Monday through Thursday role, working four hour days. When practical, this may require five 8-hour days and/or evening and night work to accommodate customers’ needs.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Welding & Piping Lead Mechanic include but are not limited to:

Daily

  • Enter and submit time for all crews on the jobsite in Fieldman

  • Claim quantities installed, in Fieldman

  • Monitor, practice, and lookout for safety compliance (potential jobsite hazards, PPE, trenches, etc.)

    • Daily Job site analysis (Safety)

  • Review of the project to schedule deliveries of materials and maintain schedule.

  • Communicate with BBI crew, BBI project management, general contractor reps, owner reps, etc.

  • Provides clear instruction to crews to ensure that their work is completed with efficiency and accuracy

  • Set daily progress goals for BBI crews to meet and hold crews accountable to those goals

  • Ensure that high standard housekeeping practices are being followed at all times

  • Care for and maintain company owned property (vehicle is maintained as requested, tools, equipment and materials are properly secured and locked in truck or on job site)

  • Basic understanding maintaining/inspecting jobsite equipment.

  • Coordinate work with other subcontractors, jobsite superintendent, etc. as required

Weekly

  • Enter/update Short Interval Plan in Fieldman.

  • Review SIP with PM and/or Field Operations Manager

  • Perform any and all other duties assigned/requested by Field Operations Manager.

  • Review, identify, and order materials due to change orders, shortages, coordination with other trades, and re-routing.

    • Two day lead time will be required for the orders

  • Weekly safety meeting (toolbox talks)

  • Ensure as-built drawings are accurately updated

  • Assessment of complete week

Monthly

  • Participate in the project forecast, progress, and/or pre-construction meetings as requested.

  • Execute the monthly inspection of company provided fire extinguishers on your company vehicle, jobsite, and equipment

Annually

  • Participate in annual review of self.

  • Assist in the evaluation of apprentices that report directly to you.

General

  • Provide material take offs to be ordered based on logical area of work (2 days in advance)

  • Follow all Blauch Brothers, Inc. company policies as directed in the Employee handbook.

  • Complete 30-60-90 day review for new apprentices assigned to you or new mechanics placed on your job

  • Attend and participate in all required meetings (safety, coordination, forecasting, manpower, etc.)

  • Participates in the mentorship program.

  • Execute the testing and inspection of all piping installed to meet local jurisdiction standards.

  • Provide leadership regarding safety regulations and policies, including utilizing and instructing others in safe and appropriate use of tools required for the job

  • Hold other BBI team members accountable to our BBI policies and Standards

  • Identify and ensure that all change orders are appropriately documented and communicated to management

  • Ensure that all work is completed based on current blueprints and change orders

  • Perform all work accurately demonstrating conscientious, superior workmanship according to BBI standards

  • Plan and organize to meet priorities, goals, and man hour allocation

  • Open to change and new information; rapidly adapt to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles

  • Research and recommend procedures in the continuous improvement.

  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends.

  • Ability to work overtime, holidays, flexible hours, weekends and travel as necessary to accommodate our customers’ needs.

Organizational Relationship:

  • Welding/Piping Lead Mechanic reports to Blauch Brothers, Inc. Field Operations Manager.

  • Welding/Piping Lead Mechanic supervises assigned man power and can perform documented verbal counseling if needed.

Additional Requirement:

Valid Driver’s License required along with an acceptable driving record as defined by our insurer, must have/pass acceptable criminal background check

Experience:

4-6 years of Welding/piping trade knowledge, supervisory and management experience preferred. Prior construction experience required.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to perform basic physical tasks normal to the construction industry, including but not limited to kneeling for long periods, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, bending, crawling, lifting at least 50 lbs. and be able to work with arms above head level for sustained periods of time; must be able to work in hot and cold temperatures and in adverse weather and job site conditions.
