SHEET METAL LEAD MECHANIC
Construction Division 

Purpose and Scope:

​

Lead Mechanics play a crucial role in our company's success. They provide hands-on leadership to field crews, ensuring jobs are completed on schedule from layout preparation to final installation and testing. They serve as the communication link between the job site and management. Lead Mechanics oversee the installation of commercial piping (Plumbing/Piping) and HVAC systems (Sheet Metal) as specified by each job's blueprints. They also supervise and provide direction to Apprentices, Journeymen, and Helpers, ensuring the quality of the finished products. In some cases, mechanics may be assigned to projects in other departments due to economic factors.

Responsibilities:

  • Arrive on time and leave at the end of the workday.

  • Comply with and enforce Company policies.

  • Represent the Company professionally and excel in work performance.

  • Plan and organize the worksite to meet priorities and goals.

  • Provide clear instructions and ensure correct work execution.

  • Perform work accurately according to Company standards and codes.

  • Communicate change orders effectively between the office and the field.

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and guide inexperienced workers.

  • Identify cost-effective procedures and workflow improvements.

  • Maintain Company-owned property and secure tools and equipment.

  • Interpret and apply blueprints during layout.

  • Problem-solve and involve relevant trades/groups for solutions.

  • Foster a cooperative work environment.

  • Conduct performance evaluations for subordinates.

  • Organize job operations, including material ordering and scheduling.

  • Participate in training for additional knowledge.

  • Coordinate work with other crews and supervisors.

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding job-related matters.

  • Attend required meetings.

  • Assist with jobs within the Company to accommodate workflow changes.

Organizational Leadership:

Lead Mechanics report to either the Piping Operations Manager or the HVAC Operations Manager and jointly supervise Helpers, Apprentices, and Journeymen.

​

Job Requirements:

  • Education and Training: Vocational training in plumbing and piping or sheet metal; Master Tradesman License preferred; Eligibility for a license or equivalent experience required.

  • Experience: Field experience required; Previous supervisory experience desired.

  • Additional Skills or Requirements: Valid Virginia Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Physical Requirements:

Must be capable of performing physical tasks common in the construction industry, including kneeling, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, bending, crawling, lifting at least 50 lbs., and working with arms above head level for sustained periods. Must be able to work in various temperatures and adverse weather conditions.

Job Type: Full-time

​

Salary Range: $21.00 - $34.00 per hour (Depending on experience)
