Blauch Brothers is completing a multi-phase HVAC upgrade at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Strasburg, Virginia. This project spotlight focuses on Phase 1, which includes 2 new outside air units, 1 rooftop and 1 ground-mounted, along with new ductwork and gas piping. Blauch Brothers installed new ductwork for this phase and is installing the new mechanical systems throughout the existing building.

The upgrade supports the school's transition away from equipment that relies on an older refrigerant being phased out. It also gives each classroom individual climate control for the first time. Instead of relying on a single temperature setting for the entire building, each classroom will be able to adjust its own comfort.

Identifying a Critical Fit Issue

During Phase 1, our team identified that portions of the specified equipment did not fit the existing building conditions as expected. On a school renovation, that kind of conflict carries added schedule pressure. Much of the disruptive work must be completed while students are out of the building, and an unresolved issue could push portions of the project into another summer.

Developing a Buildable Solution in the Field

Rather than force the original layout into the available space, our field supervisor and field foreman developed a custom sketch for revised ductwork. The proposed plan was approved, giving the installation team a clear, buildable solution without adding another delay to the timeline.

That ability to pivot is central to the Blauch Brothers approach. Renovation work does not always unfold exactly as planned, so experienced field leadership and practical problem-solving are essential to keeping construction moving.

Individual Climate Control for Classrooms

Beyond replacing aging equipment, this HVAC upgrade changes how the school manages comfort throughout the building. The existing system relied on a single temperature setting for the entire school. The new system gives each classroom individual climate control, allowing each space to be adjusted independently.

Keeping Phase 1 Moving

The approved ductwork revision resolved the fit issue without adding another delay to the project timeline. Our team also coordinated the work around summer school and the students' return, recognizing that this level of classroom access is not possible while the school is fully occupied.

Phase 1 replaces aging mechanical equipment, introduces individual classroom climate control, and demonstrates the value of experienced field leadership in an existing facility.
